Resort hotel maid, Hannah Miller never dreamed that the boy she spent every summer with until she was seventeen would grow up to become ruthless billionaire Andrew Montgomery. Or that he would call in the silly IOU she’d given him for saving her from a dangerous riptide when she was thirteen years old.

The Request Trilogy – Marquita Valentine

Thank you for joining us on The Request Trilogy Blog Tour! Visit the tour page to follow all the stops along the way!

The Request Series, a sexy, thrilling romantic contemporary romance trilogy from NY Times Bestselling Author Marquita Valentine.

Teaser 3

The Request, Book 1: Meet Roman Smith: Shopkeeper by Day. Assassin by Night.

The undercover Russian contract killer has never turned down an assignment that rids the world of scum… until his latest job targets an innocent man. Refusing is not an option, because of Everly Andrews, the sexy southern belle who saved him from dying. She’s completely unaware of his double life, but has been marked as next on the kill list should he fail. Only, what The Bratva doesn’t know–there’s nothing Roman won’t do to keep Everly safe.

EXCERPT

The Request – Roman has been shot and left for dead in his own book shop.

“At the same time?” she asks, voice trembling as she sits back. Once again her hands go to my face, stroking my cheek. She leans over me and this close I can see the fullness of her lips, the smoothness of her skin and the concern in her gaze.

“No, love. Check the wounds to see if the bullet went all the way through or not.”

“O—okay.” Gingerly, she moves away from me, careful to place my head on the hardwood floor. I watch as she grabs a pair of scissors from her purse. “I knew these would come in handy one day.”

Quickly, she cuts my pants leg off. In the background, I’m dimly aware the emergency operator is still on the line. “Well?”

“I can’t… Oh God, Roman, I have to pick up your leg to see.”

“Don’t move him,” the operator shouts.

Everly’s gaze flies to mine. She licks her lips, clearly torn between a professional and me, the reserved shopkeeper. “What do you want me to do?” she asks softly.

“Check, please, I’ll help you.” Gritting my teeth, I lift my leg, and break out into a cold sweat. “Hurry, darling.”

“There’s a hole in the back, but it’s small,” she says and I prop my foot on the shelf in front of me.

“Good.”

Sirens blare.

Everly looks over her shoulder. “They’re here. Thank God. They’re here, Roman.”

“Thank you,” I breathe, letting the darkness take me once more. Even if I never wake up again, this heaven I’m experiencing right now is worth it.

The Deception, Book 2: Drugged and deposited in a hotel in Prague, Roman must be on guard at all times in order to protect his lover, Everly Andrews, but the countdown has begun, and it won’t stop until his next target, or Everly, is terminated. Can Roman protect Everly until he can eliminate the threat to her life?

RBS - Teaser 1

The Confession, Book 3: Left for dead, Roman’s cover has been blown. Worse, Everly is in Viktor’s evil clutches, yet believes Roman to be the bad guy. Roman can’t trust anyone, not even his cousin, Benjamin, who he must team up with to rescue Everly. Will Roman get there in time to save her, or will Everly be another casualty of a family grab for power in the Bratva?

The Request Series, in Five Words
  1. Sexy: The chemistry between Roman and Everly is off the charts. He’s burning for her, and has been for months!
  2. Thrilling: I kill off a main character in the second installment. Enough said. 😉
  3. Fast-paced: Spain, Germany, France, Morocco, and North Carolina (yep, you read that correctly)- to name a few locations- by train, by car, by private jet, or running on foot away from a mansion on the verge of collapse. Roman is on the run the entire time.
  4. Suspenseful: Roman never knows who is completely on his side, or who wants him dead.
  5. Hot: Well… when Roman finally gets his hands on Everly, like he’s been wanting to do for months… make sure you have a fan or some ice on hand.
Getting to Know Roman

Roman is a great romantic hero because not only is protective, he’s willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. And for him the greater good is Everly Andrew’s safety. He’s also very observant, using his assassin training to do very sweet things for Everly—like always have her favorite hot chocolate and flavor of jelly beans on hand whenever she visits his book shop. Finally, the hallmark of a great romantic hero is that he’s a unselfish lover, taking care of Everly’s pleasure first. It gives him pleasure to satisfy her.

REVIEW

The Request was a delicious quick escape that left me looking at my e-reader in puzzlement as to where the story had gone so fast? Almost like on a perfect sunny day when you are on a patio with a Stoli Spicy Peach cocktail and all of a sudden your glass is empty with seemingly no explanation other than it was just so good. The other thing that is readily apparent and most disturbing of all is the conclusion that I have come to after reading The Request Series is that I am obviously frequenting the wrong book stores. Not once, and I have been in a number, have I come across one manned by anyone resembling Roman nor one that has an easy chair for my sole use and as many cinnamon jelly beans (I substituted Everly’s preferred green apple jelly beans, as it’s my fantasy already)  as I could eat. Jelly Bellies are not cheap, you know. Granted if I ever found such a place they would have to bodily remove me and possibly obtain a restraining order.

In the first of the series, Everly Andrews has found just such a place, she has her books shipped to a store manned by a sinfully handsome man with a clientèle of one, herself. She just doesn’t know that very salient fact. Roman knows he should discourage Everly from coming into the store, in actuality a front for his “real” business but he just can’t resist their weekly meetings as brief as they might be. That is until his other life intervenes in the form of an assassin sent to exterminate Roman and the choice is wrested from him.

I greatly enjoyed The Request Series, my only complaint was that it was over too soon but I suppose I only have my reading gluttony to blame. Ms Valentine perfectly combined an unlikely heroine and a deliciously attractive assassin wrapped in a bookstore (does it get any better?) and I was completely sold as a result. Now while I still might doubt the veracity of the existence of such a bookseller particularly one who happens to look like Roman I will spend my time pondering this and also wondering if perhaps Ian Fleming’s James Bond was not as grounded in fiction as I thought either.

NYT - Teaser 1 - Copy

 EXCERPT

Half expecting to run into Parker, I fly through the Piggly Wiggly like they are having a fire sale. I know he lives close to me, and since this is the only grocery store on this side of Forrestville, it stands to reason he would come here.

Unless he has a girlfriend or wife shopping and cooking for him. When we met, I didn’t bother to check his ring finger. Maybe I should have, then that could be reason number two for avoiding him.

Inwardly groaning, I know I shouldn’t have any reason for avoiding him. I shouldn’t be thinking of him at all.

After paying, I push the buggy over to the community board by the exit. It’s sectioned off in three parts—events, housing, and employment. I scan over the employment first—no reason to look at events, since I don’t have the extra money to go.

“Bartender, dog groomer, cake decorator,” I mutter to myself. Ugh. I have no experience with any of those positions. “Assistant office manager.” I perk up. This is something I can do. I have an associate degree in office management. “Call Rowan at 910-,” I grab the advertisement and immediately call her.

“Callahan’s Auto Repair.”

“Hi, I’d like to speak to Rowan, please.”

“This is she.”

“I’m calling about the assistant office manager’s position.” Name. Tell her your name. Gah. I’m so bad at this. “I’m Brooklyn Reeves, by the way.”

A slight pause. “How much experience do you have, Brooklyn?”

“Three years, and I have a degree in office management as well.”

“Awesome. You’re hired.”

My jaw drops. “Just like that?”

“I could really use the help.”

“Don’t you want to run a background check, or call my references? Make me pee in a cup?” Stop talking. The woman is giving you a job, you drunk possum.

Rowan snorts. “You can on one of your breaks, but I’m not touching it, and you have to bring your own cup.”

I let out a nervous laugh. “That’s okay. I was being a little uh…”

“Excited.”

“Yes, excited,” I answer, thankful she’s given me a way out of my embarrassment. “So excited to start on—?”

“Tomorrow. Callahan’s is open Monday through Saturday. We can discuss your schedule and job duties when you come in. See you at eight.”

“Sounds great,” I manage to say before she hangs up.

Taking the advertisement, I shove it and my cell into my purse, a big smile blooming on my face. I goofy dance my way to the parking lot, bumping the buggy with my hip to keep it rolling.

“Oh yeah… who got the job, even after making a fool of herself?” I sing on the way, pausing when I get to my SUV. Looking at the window, I point at myself and my reflection does the same. “This girl got the job. That’s who. Break it down.”

A truck rolls up beside me, and butterflies form in my stomach as my face heats up and I try to be all nonchalant about my Taylor Swift Shake it Off dance style. Braden always said my parking lot victory dances were going to get me in trouble one day. Then again, he’d been the one to encourage me to do them in the first place. He’d been the one dancing right along with me.

The door opens, and who gets out? The man I’ve been dreading to run into, of course. Crap. Parker Morgan does shop here. Alone.

My smile falls, and I hurry to load my groceries so I don’t have to speak to him. Gosh, why did I have to buy so many things?

I toss the bags inside, one tipping over. Oranges bounce out, one by one, and I watch in horror as they roll right into a pair of boots.

Parker bends down, picking them up and holding them out. I can’t help, but stare at him as if he’s offering me the apple that did Adam and Eve in.

“Here you go,” he says, carefully placing them back into the buggy. He puts his hands into the pockets of his dark jeans and stares right back at me. “How is everything?” he asks.

“Fine.” Standard answer to a standard question. I don’t know why I thought our next meeting would be something more.

With my next breath, my body unfreezes. I start loading groceries again, but just as I turn around to grab another bag… there he is, taking a huge bag of charcoal from the bottom and hefting it over his shoulder like it weighs nothing.

His forearms flex, big hand gripping both side as he adjusts the bag, and my body flushes hot. He walks toward me and I back up, bumping into my car. Leaning over, he places the bag in the back, his body so close that his T-shirt brushes my arm.

“Thank you,” I murmur.

“You’re welcome,” he says, his voice equal parts soothing and arousing.

My breath hitches and my heart pounds.

Parker turns slightly, his golden-green gaze raking over me. His lips part and so do mine. I can see a smattering of freckles on his nose, just a few, but enough to make me want to melt, because it only adds to his looks.

He touches my arm. “I’m sorry about the way I spoke to you yesterday. I want to thank you for your,” He swallows, his strong throat working. Never in my life have I have been so mesmerized by the sight of a man swallowing. “Sacrifice. I can’t imagine what that must have been like to lose your husband.”

The mention of husband snaps right out of my lust-induced trance. “My what?” I say sharply.

EXCERPT

The closer I get to Brooklyn’s place, the faster my pulse races. I take a curve a little too sharply and have to slam down on the brakes. Glancing at the dash, I curse. I’d hit a forty-five mile per hour curve at seventy.

“Holy fuck,” I mumble under my breath.

What’s wrong with me? I don’t have a death wish, but with each passing day, I’m becoming more and more like my brother and less and less like myself—If I even know who I am anymore.

Brooklyn’s SUV is parked beside the house, under a small lean-to. The porch lights are on, a consideration I don’t deserve. Cutting the engine, I get out and grab my tools from the truck bed before striding to the front door.

Determined to get this over with as fast as possible, I knock and ring the doorbell at the same time.

“Hey, it’s me, Parker Morgan,” I shout.

The door swings open, and all that stands between us is screen door. My breath nearly whooshes out of me at the sight of her standing there, wearing an oversized T-shirt and a pair of baggy shorts. Her dark hair is pulled into loose pigtails. I don’t think I’ve seen a sexier sight.

Her gaze rakes over me. “I didn’t think you were coming.”

“I said I was.”

She opens the screen door and steps back to let me inside. “Yeah, I heard,” she says dryly. “Come with me.”

I follow her to the back of the kitchen, to a small closet off to one side. The door is propped open, and the single light bulb hanging down is blazing. Once I’d accidentally touched the thing and had gotten a small blister from the heat.

“Why do you think it’s broken?”

“Because I have no hot water to wash dishes or shower.”

“Did you check the breaker?”

“Yes.”

Setting my toolbox down, I inspect the heater. It has to be at least twenty years old. “I’m surprised it’s worked this long.”

“Do you think I’ll need to buy a new one?” she asks, clearly distraught.

I shake my head. “If you did, then you’d get reimbursed. You’re renting the place, remember?”

“Oh.” She lets out a shaky laugh. “It’s been a while since I didn’t have to worry about replacing things, and before then, Braden always took care of stuff like this.”

The reminder of her husband makes me frown a little. I’m not upset with her. I’m pissed off at myself. For no good reason besides my own personal issues, I’ve been blowing hot and cold at her, instead of being an even-tempered, standup guy.

I bend down to check the pilot light. It’s out. “Found your problem.”

“You did?” She squats down next to me, our heads nearly touching.

“Pilot’s out.”

She groans. “I could have sworn I’d checked that before I called you. Sorry.”

I glance at her. “It’s part of my job.”

A wry smile covers her face. “It’s Thursday night. I’m sure you would rather be—” Once again, her gaze rakes over me, taking in my button-down shirt and dark jeans. Her cheeks heat. “You were on a date, weren’t you?” She smacks her hand over her mouth for a minute. “Ugh. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not. You should have told me.”

Irritated at her apology, because it makes me feel like more of an ass, I growl, “If I had wanted you to know my personal life, Brooklyn, I would have told you.”

She jerks her head a couple of times, forcing a smile on her face, but the hurt in her eyes is evident. What’s wrong with you? I ask myself for the second time that night. “Yeah. It really is none of my business. I just… if I had known, then I would have made do until you weren’t so busy.”

Would have made do? Inwardly groaning, I light the pilot and stand. Brooklyn shoots to her feet. “Don’t apologize. Like I said, this is part of the job description.”

“Right. Let me get out of your way,” she says and turns, only to bump into me and stumble backward.

“Careful,” I admonish, my protective instincts coming out in full force as I grab her wrist to prevent her from falling, but her foot slips and she trips over my toolbox.

Without thinking, I jerk her to me, our bodies colliding against one another in the cramped space. Her pretty eyes fly to my face and our gazes collide. There’s a hitch in her breath, just like when I’d helped her with her groceries.

Neither of us moves an inch, and I don’t let go. Instead, I begin to caress her skin with my thumb, right against the pulse point on her wrist. It’s beating out of control, from almost falling or because I’m touching her, I’m not sure.

“Parker,” she says softly.

“Yeah,” I answer in a voice I barely recognize. I dip my head, needing to taste her. Needing to get the inevitable over with.

“Let go of me.” Her sweet breath fans over my lips, and I freeze.

My intentions had been noble. I hadn’t wanted her to fall, but now I don’t want to let her go. I want to keep her here, where she belongs, with her hot little body pressed to mine. My free hand settles on her hip and squeezes.

Please.” Tipping her head back, she licks her lips and it’s then I notice how badly her body is shaking in my arms. Her eyes are so wide that there’s hardly any color.

“Don’t be scared,” I whisper. “I won’t hurt you. I promise.” I nip at her jaw and kiss my way up to her ear. Her skin is soft, hot, and tastes like heaven. There’s nothing artificial about her. Nothing demanding. “You like that?”

“Oh, God. Yes.” Her hands slide up my arms, fingers curling around my biceps. She says my name, a little plea that makes me close my eyes.

I suck in her earlobe and bite down gently, rocking my body against hers. Sliding my hand down her hip, I cup her firm ass and then glide my fingers down to her thigh to pull it up high and tight. I rock against her, making her head fall back on a moan. Need builds inside of me.

Pressing my hand against her lower back, I pick up the pace, rolling my hips, and making sure that my dick hits her in just the right spot.

She whimpers a little, a small, helpless sound that makes me so hard I can barely think. I just want her. “That’s such a pretty little sound, baby. Make it for me again.”

I feel her lips on my neck, the tentative lick of her tongue. Pleasure floods my system. My chest fucking heaves, like I’ve just lifted weights for the past hour and finally stopped. I cup her ass with both hands, rubbing against her… watching her cheeks flush and her white teeth come out to bite at her bottom lip.

Suddenly, her hands come between us, pushing at my chest. “Don’t… Please. You can’t… I can’t. My—I’m still… widowed.”

She makes no sense, only the catch in her voice bringing me out of my driving need. Sympathy replaces it as I remember how alone Brooklyn is in the world. Growing up with a sorry excuse of a mom like Crystal, I know how that feels. Only, Cole and I always had each other, and then once Kelly was born, we focused everything on her.

“I’m sorry for making you think I could.” She shakes her head. “I’m sorry.”

Damn it. I have to force myself to let go of her slowly, gently… not like I’m throwing her away because I’m pissed off. I’m anything but. “It’s no big deal,” I say and kiss her nose. “No harm, no foul.”

She continues to stare up at me, confusion, desire, and sadness swirling in those grey depths. “No big deal?”

I touch her cheek. “I meant about saying no.”

Her lashes flutter, fanning out on the tops of her cheeks. “Oh.”

“Give the water an hour to warm up and then try again,” I say, all business now. It was a mistake to touch her, but at least it didn’t go any further. Grabbing my toolbox, I take a step back, out of the confines of that small room and away from the desire roaring for me to take her. “Text me if it doesn’t work.”

She nods, swallowing so hard I can hear her. “Because you’ll be with your date and don’t want to be interrupted?”

No, baby, I’ll be thinking of you and doing God knows what in the shower to take the edge off. Actually, I know exactly what I’ll do. “Something like that.” Or I could call Dani and see if she’s still around. A part of me rebels at the thought. I can fuck who I want now, I remind myself. I can be with whomever I want. My terms. Not anyone else’s. “Is there anything else you need?”

See, I can do this. Calm, professional, and oh, so helpful. Besides, after what happened, I’m pretty damn sure she won’t be asking me to do anything for a while. And I’m pretty damn sure I need the space from her, now more than ever. No matter my newfound freedom, Brooklyn doesn’t strike me as the type of girl I can fool around without consequences.

“Tomorrow, could you come over and repair the back door on the screened-in porch? It’s not closing properly and I can’t lock it. And the window in the guest bedroom won’t lock either. I like to lock things at night—you know, for safety, not because I’m obsessed with locks.” She wrings her hands, her face worried and embarrassed as hell. “If you already have plans, then don’t worry about it. I can wait until you do have time.”

I can’t have her feeling unsafe. She’s all alone in a new town. “Make a list for me, sweetheart.”

She reaches out to touch my arm, her hand hovering before she pulls it back. I frown. “I’ll make it worth your while.”

I blink at her. Hadn’t Dani said those very words to me?

“By fixing you supper,” she quickly adds, turning away to grab a sponge and wipe at the kitchen counters. “I’m a decent cook, or I can order a pizza. Does anyone deliver out this far?”

“No,” I snap

Her embarrassed-driven cleaning stops mid-swipe. “Fine. No dinner.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.” Yet, I keep giving it to her like that every time.

She looks up at me expectantly.

I should stop while I’m ahead. Pay someone else to come out here and help her instead of me. It’s obvious that I can’t control myself when I’m around her. I can’t deal with that right now. For one, Brooklyn deserves better than me. And two, I’m leaving in a couple of months. Without anyone else.

“No one delivers out this far.” Obviously, I have brain-to-mouth issues that need work.

Her forehead wrinkles adorably. “So…”

“I’ll be back tomorrow evening.”

A surprised blush stains her cheeks. “Then I’ll have supper waiting.”

Love So Hot – Marquita Valentine COMING SOON!

Marquita Valentine has a new series coming in early 2015! Meet the Brody Lawson in Love So Hot!

Title: Love So Hot (Lawsons #1)

Age Group: Adult

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: January 2015

Cover Designer: Lindee Robinson Photography

Book Description:

Bank Teller and all around good girl, Sydney McKnight, is tired of being the girl all the guys want to have as a friend. Who better to help unleash her inner vixen than her best friend and secret crush, Brody Lawson? Only, Sydney has no idea how to ask him, without their friendship going up in flames, until that is, the town of Jessamine’s annual Firemen’s Auction gives her the perfect excuse to set her plan into motion.

Fire Captain Brody Lawson has been in love with his best friend, Sydney, for years, but he would never risk their friendship by confessing his feelings to her. So, when Sydney beats out the competition to buy his time at the annual Firemen’s Auction, Brody can hardly believe his luck until she asks him to teach her how to seduce a fellow fireman.

Now, it’s up to Brody to show Sydney how perfect she already is and convince her that they only man for her is him, because if Sydney is going to seduce any man, it’s going to be him. And once he has her in his bed, he’s not letting her go.

EXCERPT

Sydney looked away, unable to withstand Brody’s blue gaze. Her heart pounded in her chest so hard that it actually hurt. “Obviously, I bid on the wrong guy.”

He gently lifted her chin. “I said I was shocked, not disappointed.”

“Shocked and disappointed aren’t too far off from each other.”

He gave her an amused look as he let her go. “Really?”

She nodded, becoming more and more uncomfortable by the minute. What had she been thinking? Oh right, the three Strawberry daiquiris had thought for her. “Yeah, like when you drink milk while expecting a soda. It’s disgusting.”

Instead of answering her, he dusted his thumb across her bottom lip. Her breath hitched. He dipped his head and she shrunk back a little, but he grabbed her chin again. She couldn’t even close her eyes as his lips softly pressed against hers, as he teased the seam of her mouth and sucked in her top lip.

Fire raced through her, all the way to her toes, making them curl in her too-tight heels. All she could think was that Brody was kissing her. Kissing her, Sydney McKnight.

Sweet Lord.

Brody Lawson was kissing her in front of everyone who might or might not be driving by the local VFW. Wouldn’t they be shocked?

Pulling away, Brody searched her face, his sexy lips wet from kissing her. She wanted to kiss him again, to learn more about what he liked, how he tasted, and if she could make his knees weak.

She blinked up at him, slowly, taking in his confident smile. “What was that for?”

He laughed low in his throat. “Sweetheart, you look mighty shocked right now. Or is that disappointed?”

Sydney felt neither. She felt… hot and bothered and all the things she assumed kissing him would do to her. It was now or never.

He rubbed his jaw. “It can’t be either of those, because you were begging to be kissed and I have never left a woman disappointed in her life.”

Aggravation rose inside of her, more powerful than the temporary insanity of lust she’d just experienced. There was no way she could admit her feelings for him, not now. Maybe not ever. While she thought their kiss had been all fireworks and super novas, he was just being himself–that side of him she didn’t always care for, because it was so dang cocky… and never directed at her. No one ever tried to seduce her, because in the town of Jessamine, Sydney McKnight would always be considered the girl everyone wanted as a friend. Including the men. Especially the men.

“That’s really good to know, because I need an expert like you to teach me.”

His brows drew together in obvious confusion. “Teach you to do what?”

“To seduce a man.”

Over the tops of the trees, the Atlanta skyline rose. “I like being so close to the city, but far enough away that it feels like I’m in the country.”

“Your yard is huge. Big enough to play a pickup game,” he said. “Maybe I should buy a place out here.”

Her heart beat out a funny rhythm at the thought of Ryan becoming her neighbor. “I plan on putting a pool in, but I can’t decide where exactly, because I’d have to remove a few trees,” she said, sinking down in the love seat.

Ryan stood there for a moment and then joined her. “But if you put in a pool, you’ll lose most of your yard.”

“That’s the other reason I’m taking so long. I’m still weighing the pros and cons,” she laughed.

His thigh brushed hers and she heard him suck in a breath. Leaning forward, she set her glass down, and then turned to him, tucking her legs beside her. The movement brought them closer together.

She brought one arm up along the back of the couch and propped her head in her hand. “You’re not drinking your tea,” she pointed out.

He glanced from his drink to her. “I’m still weighing the pros and cons.”

“Of drinking tea?”

Carefully he set his glass beside hers and then slid closer. “No, not that.” He ran his fingers along the side of her neck, and then slid them behind her head. “This.”

And then he kissed her.

The other thing that is readily apparent after reading The Request is that I am frequenting the wrong book stores. Not once, and I have been in a number, have I come across one manned by anyone resembling Roman nor one that has an easy chair for my sole use and as many cinnamon jelly beans (I substituted Everly’s preferred green apple jelly beans, as it’s my fantasy already)  as I could eat. Granted if I ever found such a place they would have to bodily remove me.

Everly Andrews has found just such a place, she has her books shipped to a bookstore manned by a sinfully handsome man with a clientèle of one, herself. She just doesn’t know that salient fact. Roman knows he should discourage Everly from coming into the store, a front for his “real” business but he just can’t resist their weekly meetings as brief as they might be. Until his other life intervenes in the form of an assassin sent to exterminate Roman.

I greatly enjoyed The Request, my only complaint was that it was over too soon but I suppose I only have my reading gluttony to blame. Ms Valentine perfectly combined an unlikely heroine and a deliciously attractive assassin wrapped in a bookstore and I was completely sold as a result. Now while I might doubt the veracity of the existence of a bookseller who looks like Roman I will spend my time pondering this while I eagerly wait for the release of The Deception.

EXCERPT

The tips of her fingers touch my mouth, and a shudder rocks my body. A sharp inhalation of breath lets me know I’m not the only one affected. Lifting my eyes, I gaze up at her, sucking on the straw and letting the cool liquid ease the burning path that used to be my throat. A connection forms between us, and she leans closer, so close that I can smell the lingering shampoo and perfume she wears. My body goes hard, and my dick joins in. The thin sheet tents. Her eyes widen, and the cup shakes. The straw slips from my mouth.

“More,”

I demand, and her attention returns to my face. I wrap my hand around her wrist and bring the cup closer, parting my lips and waiting. She doesn’t hesitate. Her fingers touch my mouth, the straw glides in, and I imagine she’s doing this to me. Her mouth is on me, taking me inside…

“You can hold this; I need to go to the restroom to freshen up. I can’t possibly smell good,” she says, hurrying away. A smile kicks up the corner of my mouth. I haven’t felt like this in years. I haven’t felt like a man instead of just a contract killer. Sure, I’ve been with women. Women who were wealthy, beautiful, and as deadly as I am with a gun. Innocents like Everly Andrews have no place in my life. But the part of me she’s awakened doesn’t want to listen to that. That part of me wants her. Wants her smile, her laugh, her touch… her body. It wants to get to know her beyond my bookstore, to know what else she likes to drink besides hot cocoa. What else she likes to eat besides Granny Smith apple-flavoured jelly beans.

“I feel a bit better now, but I really need a shower,” she announces, walking back into my room from the private bathroom. “Will you be okay if I go home to change?”

I won’t be okay, but it has nothing to do with my health or safety. It has everything to do with her.

“The nurses will keep me sorted.”

Everly stares at me for a moment. “I could go to your place and bring back whatever you need.” The only thing I need is standing by my hospital bed.

“That’s not necessary.”

“But I really appreciate the offer,” I add before she mistakes my refusal as a rejection.

“One last question before I go,” she says, her smile turning shy.

“Ask away,” I softly command.

“Do you think you can call me Everly now? I mean, I did rescue you from the jaws of death.” She bites her lip, like she’s trying not to giggle. For the first time in years, I throw my head back and laugh, uncaring of how much it hurts to do so.

“God, yes. I’ll call you whatever you want, love.”

A uniformed officer walks inside, and my laughter fades away. This is the moment I’ve been dreading. “Mr. Smith, I’m Officer Jones, and I’d like to ask you a few questions.”

Everly’s gaze bounces to the officer. “Do you need me for anything?”

Officer Jones gives her an easy smile, one that speaks of familiarity. “You’ve been more than helpful, Ms. Andrews.”

“Great.”

She walks to me, her eyes soft as her fingers brush my hair back. I can’t help but wonder what she told the police. Has she betrayed me, without even knowing it? “I’ll see you later,” she says, and then leaves the room.

Officer Jones steps closer to my bed, pulling out a pad of paper and a pen. “Can you tell me what happened on the 26th?”

Prepared for this moment, I say, “A man walked in, clearly high, wanting money. He picked the wrong shop. I don’t deal with cash. Credit card purchases only.”

“That would explain the lack of a till,” the officer says as he takes notes.

I clear my throat. “When he realized I wasn’t lying, he got all pissed and fired a couple of shots—lucky shots, and then,” I close my eyes, as if the memory is painful to relive, “I passed out. I’m not quite sure how long I laid there before Ms. Andrews came inside, looking for her coat.”

“Detectives have already been down to your bookstore. We couldn’t find a weapon or any other bullet holes.”

My eyes open, inwardly relieved. My secrets are safe. “Son of a bitch.”

“Is there anything else you can tell me about the perp? Maybe describe him?”

“Brownish hair, late twenties to early thirties. Male.  Um, eyes, uh… bloodshot. His skin was a sickly grey color.”

Officer Jones snorts. “You just described every junkie down on Hargett.”

Perfect. I make another noise of disgust. “I’m not that observant. Honestly, all I can remember is the barrel of his gun.”

The officer nods. “Thank you for your time. If we have more questions, we’ll be in touch.”

“Thank you.”

As soon as Officer Jones walks out of the room, I exhale. My cover hasn’t been blown, and I’m still alive. But what will I do about Everly? I owe her my life now. I owe her everything.
