Barbarian Mine (Ice Planet Barbarians #4) – Ruby Dixon

In July this year I discovered a brand new “one-click” author by the name of Ruby Dixon. Who would have thought that I had a preference for 7′ foot tall blue aliens? Yet surprisingly I do, I guess it shouldn’t be that much of a shock what with my not so secret penchant for sci-fi. In fact, if you were to pair it with romance and liberal amounts of wine and you might never see me again… but I digress I loved, LOVED Ice Planet Barbarians it was unique, quirky, funny and smokin’ hot. I proceeded to rip my way through the rest of the series as quickly as I could load them onto my iPad. To the point that I think I am reading pretty much as fast as she can write them. You can go ahead and judge me, #sorry, not sorry.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to read the latest in the series Barbarian Mine and suffice it to say I was intrigued, read – I dropped everything and started reading immediately. There was literally a party right in the hallway outside of my hotel room and did I join them, heck no! I had reading to do.

Barbarian Lover, the third book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with the unmistakable sound of a khui resonating and then Harlow being knocked unconscious, leaving the reader to assume that she is to be dragged off to some mysterious alien’s lair to be his mate/sex slave? With that sort of hook who could resist? Certainly not I and Barbarian Mine fulfilled every one of my expectations. While I had greatly enjoyed Barbarian Alien (Liz’s story) and Barbarian Lover (Kira’s story), it was  perfect timing for Ms Dixon to throw a mystery into the mix.

The ice planet has given me a second lease on life, so I’m thrilled to be here. Sure, there’s no cheeseburgers, but I’m healthy and ready to be a productive member of the small tribe.

What I didn’t anticipate? That there’d be a savage stranger waiting nearby, watching me. And when he takes me captive, the unthinkable happens… I resonate to him.

Resonance means mating, and children… but I don’t know if this guy’s ever been around anyone before. He’s truly a barbarian in all ways, right down to clubbing me over the head and claiming me as his own.

So why is it that I crave his touch and hunger for more?

I must applaud Ms. Dixon for taking a unique, okay kinda weird but not as far out as one might think, idea and managing story after story and keeping the reader engaged and wondering what will happen next. For those unfamiliar with the Ice Planet Barbarians series and who are not as utterly committed to reading books in order like myself, the series follows a group of female alien abductees who en route to be sold into slavery crash onto a very inhospitable planet.

IPBIce Planet Barbarians – You’d think being abducted by aliens would be the worst thing that could happen to me. And you’d be wrong. Because now, the aliens are having ship trouble, and they’ve left their cargo of human women – including me – on an ice planet.

And the only native inhabitant I’ve met? He’s big, horned, blue, and really, really has a thing for me…

The survivors face a number of challenges first and foremost to do away with their captors. Then they have to figure out how to survive in an arctic-like climate with no supplies and with hostile indigenous species. Shortly, after the crash they come upon another reluctant resident of the planet the mostly male sa-khui they are huge (about 7′ tall), horned and blue. Who wouldn’t think it would be an instant love connection? However, after three books it was time for something different and hoo-boy Harlow’s story is precisely that.

It may flirt with your sensibilities to read the Ice Planet Barbarians series but let me assure you that they deliver in hilarity and in plain ol’ entertainment value. To occupy myself while waiting for the next installment I will console myself with Ice Planet Holiday and ponder what Ruby Dixon will do with a whole motorcycle club.

Thanks to the author for providing a copy for review, it was truly wonderful. More please!

This Montgomery Has a Head for Business

Working for Zach Montgomery is challenging on many levels-coming from a wealthy and powerful family, he lives by his own rules and doesn’t answer to anyone. But Gabriella Martine has no intention of backing down. She’s used to handling stubborn men, and it doesn’t hurt that Zach is smart, charismatic…and gorgeous.

And a Heart for Adventure

Zach’s perfect world is turned upside down when a climbing accident leaves him broken, angry, and maddeningly dependent. In his slow quest for recovery, Gabriella is always there to help…but as Zach comes to see his beautiful assistant in a new light, he is forced to re-evaluate what it really means to be a man worthy of Gabriella’s love.

Reaching across the table, Zach took one of Gabriella’s hands in his and just marveled at how soft it was. He always wondered what her skin felt like and now that he knew, he wanted to feel more. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

Her blue eyes filled with tears and she used her free hand to quickly wipe them away before they fell and then studied their hands on the table. “Zach,” she said softly, “we’ve been over this.”

“I know, I know,” he replied just as softly. “I need another chance, Gabriella. I need a chance to make things right.” He looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “I need you.”

Deciding to be bold, he turned her hand over and twined their fingers together and gently squeezed. He was surprised she didn’t pull away and thought maybe—just maybe—they were making progress. “I know I can’t erase the things I’ve said and done, but if you’ll give me one more chance, Gabs, I promise not to screw up. If I do anything to upset you, you can walk away. Hell, you can slap me in the face, kick me in the shin or throw something heavy at me and I’ll take it. I just…I can’t do this without you.”

Her eyes never left their joined hands.

“I don’t want to do this without you,” he said quietly.

“I’m afraid to…believe you.” He barely heard her words, they were uttered so softly.

Everything inside of him clenched with pain. His always confident, ever-efficient assistant was now distrusting and uncertain—because of him. “I don’t know what to say to make you believe me. Tell me. Tell me what I need to do. Anything. Anything you need from me to gain your confidence, and I’ll do it.”

She looked up at him. “It’s not that easy. Every day I walked into the office, I gave you another chance. Every time you berated me or made me feel like I screwed up and I came back, I gave you another chance. From my standpoint, you’ve had two years’ worth of second chances. I think I’ve been more than generous.”

His other hand reached out to cup her hand in both of his. “I know you have and you have no idea how much I appreciated it.” She looked at him with disbelief. “It’s true! I know I never said it but every morning you were there, I was thankful. Every time you walked into my office, I was thankful. Please. I’m begging here, Gabs.”

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011.

Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.
