BAD ROMANCE

A Stepbrother Novel

Jen McLaughlin

Releasing Sept 15th, 2015

In this explosive novel from bestselling author Jen McLaughlin, a good girl falls for the ultimate bad boy: her stepbrother. Perfect for fans of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, Bad Romance proves that passion can be so wrong it’s right.

Seven years in the army will change a guy. But after a shoulder wound ends his career as a sniper, Jackson Worthington finds himself back home, fighting a battle that’s all too familiar: keeping his hands off Lily Hastings. She’s still her rich daddy’s little angel, innocent, impossibly lovely, as squeaky-clean as Jackson is dirty. And she’s still his stepsister—forbidden but not forgotten, not after the soul-melting kiss that got him kicked out of the house at eighteen. He couldn’t resist her then. How the hell can he resist her now?

Lily is about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and commit to a high-stress job she hates, all to please the father who controls every waking moment of her life. On top of everything, her teenage crush is back, with a sleek, chiseled body and a trace of the rebellious boy whose lips sealed her fate. Jackson’s timing couldn’t be worse . . . or better. Because Lily’s all grown up, too. She’s aching for another taste. And for the first time, she’s ready to be a bad girl.

REVIEW

I can’t help but wonder at the title of this novel as the infamous Lady Gaga’s song lyrics run through the back of my mind.

I want your love and
I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance

Lily’s father and Jackson’s mother married when she was fifteen and he was seventeen. Understandably Lily was immediately smitten with her new brother. She also was a glutton for punishment, the darling daughter of a budding megalomaniac Lily is the only one who treats Jackson with any consideration and in true angsty fashion our hero treats every kind gesture of Lily’s with suspicion or feigned ignorance. After catching his daughter and his far less malleable stepson in a torrid embrace Jackson is written off after which he promptly joins the military to work out his inner demons.

You know that I want you
And you know that I need you
I want it bad, your bad romance

Fast forward seven years and after a shoulder wound ends his sniper career Jackson is at a cross roads when conveniently he runs into his step sister. Before he knows it they are roommates and lovers, the only complication is Lily’s fiancé. Whoa, what? Yes you read that correctly but not to worry Lily is only considering marrying the chump to save lives. Well not exactly but close enough.

I want your love and
I want your revenge
I want your love
I don’t wanna be friends

Bad Romance was an entertaining if frustrating read, Lily’s doormat tendencies, of course couched in terms of nobility had me grinding my teeth on more than one occasion. However I have come to two conclusions first that Lady Gaga’s song however nice to listen to make no sense whatsoever and second that I am the problem and may be caught in a bad romance with angst. Despite the interesting plotline and solid writing I found myself wanting to sit the characters down and have a serious chat with them about their choices and the importance of communication in relationships. However, I have no doubt that there will be many who will enjoy Bad Romance with none of the confusion or annoyance that I found my enjoyment tempered with.

The tall, dark-haired and handsome as hell med student, sweeps Holly away from the pain of her past and reveals to her the bright future that lays ahead. That is, until she falls pregnant just as Jake begins his internship at P and E; his family’s hospital.

Will this love at first sight lead her to the fairytale she has always craved? Or, will she fall victim to a betrayal of the heart yet again?

3D Imperfect Love

EXCERPT

Holly climbed out of the plush chair and gingerly walked across the soft carpet. Grasping the metal handle, she opened the closet door with a flourish and pulled out the suitcase. Flapping it open, she began arranging all her clothes haphazardly. Lucky for her, it was a big suitcase. When she’d bought it, she knew the size would come in handy one day; she just never thought that it would be used for this.

Pausing in her frantic packing, she fell back onto the white carpet, letting her hair swirl around her, reflecting the tornado of emotions swirling inside her. How could he have done this to her? They’d had so many dreams. They could have been such a great couple, if he would have just kept his dick in his pants. Heaven knew she loved Brandon, but she refused to marry Donna, too.

Tears began streaming down her cheeks, leaving a hot path that burned into her very soul. She inhaled deeply, trying not to lose it as she pushed her hair back. She knew that as soon as his Audi pulled into the driveway, he was going to start with his begging again. Especially now; a week before the big day.

She had to stand her ground. She owed it to herself, and deserved so much more than a two-timing whore! Yes, if women were called whores when they did it, men could be labeled in the same manner.

Suddenly, her phone began buzzing frantically. As she looked at the polished glass screen, a beautiful picture of him and her smiling greeted her. Damn… they looked so happy.

REVIEW

I can’t help but wonder if I am missing out on a vast ocean of awesome books living in North America. Though some might say I need another book like I need a hole in the head but that would probably be my husband and he is just being negative. You might wonder what inspired my musings on this and that would be because Imperfect Love is the third or fourth book I have read by a South African author in the two plus years that I have been blogging and I have enjoyed each and every one of them.

Holly’s ex-fiancée was a dirtbag in all caps, a serial  cheater. The final straw was the email just a few days before her wedding which went on without her if you can believe! Holly consoled herself in an all out  attempt at man hating but that went all up in flames when she met Jake. And understandably so,  Jake was pretty much perfect if such a being exists.

Imperfect Love was a subtly good read, though I might have wanted to smack Holly a time or ten. Truly it wasn’t her fault, my boundaries with reading can problematic at times and I can get a bit tetchy when the characters do not do precisely what I want at the moment I want them to. Regardless, Imperfect Love managed to capture and keep my sometimes wandering attention and I would definitely read more by Ms White in the future.

DREAMS OF HER OWN

Dreams Come True #3

Rebecca Heflin

Releasing November 2015

Soul Mate Publishing, LLC

Can even the unlikeliest of dreams come true?

He sees a spinsterish misfit. If the Guinness Book of World Records had a category for the world’s most boring life, Millie Stephens knows she would hold the record. After the plain, strait-laced personal assistant is saved by a total stranger from becoming New York City’s latest traffic fatality, she has a disheartening epiphany: her life’s highlight reel didn’t exist. Determined to step out of the shadows and take a walk on the wild side, she starts Millie-style – by making a list.

She sees a stereotypical thug. That total stranger, bad boy Ian Brand, is more than the sum of his parts. Beneath that sexy, tattooed exterior is a man with a painful past who’s desperate to both hide and overcome his disability in the pursuit of his dreams. But his decision to bid on a large construction project could both lead to his downfall and reveal his secret.

Will Millie and Ian look beneath the surface and see there’s more to each other than meets the eye?

If the Guinness Book of World Records had a category for the world’s most boring life, Millie Stephens knew she would hold the record. Bundled up in her brown wool coat against the chill of a New York fall, she hurried down the Brooklyn sidewalk to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for her boss.

As personal assistant for best-selling romance author, Darcy Butler-Ryan, Millie kept her calendar, edited her manuscripts, handled her social media, and through her agent, Gloria Madison, scheduled her public appearances, among other duties. Since Darcy had become pregnant, Millie had also taken it upon herself to run errands and generally oversee Darcy’s health and well-being.

Thus, the trip to the pharmacy for Darcy’s anti-nausea medication. She consulted the day’s to-do list to see what other errands were on it. Lists were her life. They provided organization, structure, and a sense of accomplishment. She loved ticking things off her list so much that if she accomplished something that wasn’t on the list, she’d write it down just so she could have the pleasure of marking it off.

She had a list for everything. Errands. Tasks. Books to be read. Special dates to remember. If something needed doing, she had a list for it, all appropriately categorized, of course. Shoving her errand list into her coat pocket, she stopped at the corner and waited for the walk signal. As soon as the light changed, she stepped out into the pedestrian crosswalk, anxious to get to the pharmacy and out of the cold. She glanced to her left and froze, as a delivery truck barreled down the street as if the red light meant nothing. And as if she truly were invisible.

Fear stole her ability to move and she scrunched her eyes closed hoping death would at least be quick. She strived for invisibility, but now she’d give anything to stand out. Next thing she knew she was yanked from behind and hauled up against a hard object, bands of steel around her waist, her feet dangling in the air.

“Are you okay?” a gruff male voice asked, his breath warm in her ear.

She nodded, unsure if she could do any more than that.

“I’m going to set you back on your feet. Do you think you can stand?”

Nodding again, she realized the hard object at her back was a man’s chest, and the steel bands were his arms. She slid down his body and felt the sidewalk beneath her feet. A wave of dizziness washed over her.

“Breathe,” her rescuer encouraged.

He turned her to face him, his hands on her shoulders, and she looked up and into eyes the color of a winter-gray sky, earnest with concern. His already tousled sandy blond hair ruffled in the wind whipping around the corner, and his chin bore the stubble so many women were fond of. She inhaled deeply, drawing in the scent of something spicy and leathery.

“Better?”

She nodded, still speechless.

“You should always wait after the signal changes before you cross a street. I’ve got an appointment. You’re sure you’re okay?”

She nodded.

“Be more careful next time,” the stranger in the leather jacket said before he turned to walk away.

Millie managed to put one foot in front of the other for another block before coming to a bus stop and collapsing onto the bench. Her legs shook, her hands quivered, and she struggled to take in a deep breath. All she could think about was how your life was supposed to flash before your eyes when confronted with a near-death experience, and hers . . . didn’t. Instead it was like a film projector that had run out of film – just a blank screen. What did that mean?

It meant, Millicent Grace Stephens, that your life has been so boring that the highlight reel was nonexistent. Her thirtieth birthday was right around the corner, and what had she accomplished with her life? Not much, that’s what.

Sure, she had a bachelor’s in literature, summa cum laude, with a focus on the Middle Ages from Sarah Lawrence College. She had a job she loved. And she could support herself. Other than that, she might as well have become a nun for all the excitement her life held.

She recalled the hard strength of her rescuer’s chest against her back. The rough and tumble look of him. She’d bet her first edition autographed copy of Edith Wharton’s Age of Innocence, that his life wasn’t boring. That if he had a near-death experience he’d have a highlight reel worthy of an action movie.

Rising on still-wobbly legs, she drew in a long, slow breath, and resumed her errand in an I-almost-died daze.

Dirty Rowdy Thing (Wild Seasons #2) – Christina Lauren EVEN BETTER IF POSSIBLE!

Dirty Rowdy Thing

Christina Lauren

FROM GOODREADS – Despite their rowdy hookups, Harlow and Finn don’t even like each other… which would explain why their marriage lasted only 12 hours. He needs to be in charge and takes whatever he wants. She lives by the Want-something-done? Do-it-yourself mantra. Maybe she’s too similar to the rugged fisherman – or just what he needs.

REVIEW

grey-el-james_0Recently I questioned the ability of any author of the opposite gender to capture the POV accurately of one that they hadn’t lived. Granted at the time I was musing about Grey, E.L. James’ recent travesty written from the point of view of one Christian Grey Esq. As a result I asked my husband while reading it if his penis weighed in directly on his life decisions, he scoffed at me and then after that the conversation died pretty quickly. Having lived with him for almost two decades now, I think I have a somewhat accurate read on how the average male thinks or at least the ability to recognize how they don’t think.

sweet-filthy-boyLike Harlow, I am a fixer and a natural critic. For which, I blame my September birthday, even though that would be investing a lot in the science of astrology regardless of how entertaining Sally Brompton’s predictions in the Metro are. Despite my tendencies to find fault with… well just about everything, I was completely enchanted by Sweet Filthy Boy, the setting, characters and plot were all ridiculously appealing. Both Mia and Ansel were patently adorable, even if the Frenchman seemed to be  just the tiniest bit, really almost too insignificant to mention, “too good to be true”. Despite this I couldn’t help but wonder if my inner pessimist was right and that the second either would be a cleverly veiled rewrite of the first or worse it just would not be as good. As such I had lower expectations for the second in the Wild Seasons series. However, I was wrong on both accounts as I adored Dirty Rowdy Boy.

It is hard to isolate what exactly makes Christina Lauren’s writing so appealing. Upon reading or listening to one, as I have been doing recently, there are simply so many things that leave the reader, or the reviewer in this case, completely spoiled for choice as to what they enjoyed so very much. If I had to be specific I would say this gifted writing duos’ superpower lies in their spectacular ability to create such realistic viscerally likable characters that if there are any flaws in the story itself the reader is easily able to forgive or overlook them. Well that and their white hot love scenes… seriously, we are talking surface of the sun here. But I digress, above I questioned the ability of any female writer to render a true insight into the male mind that is until I read Dirty Rowdy Thing. Finn’s inner monologue was undoubtedly male, straight forward and direct precisely as the authors described him. Though it may have taken longer for the taciturn fisherman to work his way into my affections…  but by the end there is no doubt I was as smitten as Harlow.

I can say without a doubt that I never, ever before have I found a story-line featuring BDsM even remotely intriguing. Well that is somewhat of an overstatement I am fine with the idea as long as “I” would be the one wielding the crop but after reading Dirty Rowdy Thing I can say without equivocation that I would let Finn tie me up anytime. In conclusion without a doubt Christina Lauren has proved that lightning does in fact strike twice.
