A Stepbrother Novel

Jen McLaughlin

Releasing Sept 15th, 2015

In this explosive novel from bestselling author Jen McLaughlin, a good girl falls for the ultimate bad boy: her stepbrother. Perfect for fans of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, Bad Romance proves that passion can be so wrong it’s right.

Seven years in the army will change a guy. But after a shoulder wound ends his career as a sniper, Jackson Worthington finds himself back home, fighting a battle that’s all too familiar: keeping his hands off Lily Hastings. She’s still her rich daddy’s little angel, innocent, impossibly lovely, as squeaky-clean as Jackson is dirty. And she’s still his stepsister—forbidden but not forgotten, not after the soul-melting kiss that got him kicked out of the house at eighteen. He couldn’t resist her then. How the hell can he resist her now?

Lily is about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and commit to a high-stress job she hates, all to please the father who controls every waking moment of her life. On top of everything, her teenage crush is back, with a sleek, chiseled body and a trace of the rebellious boy whose lips sealed her fate. Jackson’s timing couldn’t be worse . . . or better. Because Lily’s all grown up, too. She’s aching for another taste. And for the first time, she’s ready to be a bad girl.

I can’t help but wonder at the title of this novel as the infamous Lady Gaga’s song lyrics run through the back of my mind.

I want your love and
I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance

Lily’s father and Jackson’s mother married when she was fifteen and he was seventeen. Understandably Lily was immediately smitten with her new brother. She also was a glutton for punishment, the darling daughter of a budding megalomaniac Lily is the only one who treats Jackson with any consideration and in true angsty fashion our hero treats every kind gesture of Lily’s with suspicion or feigned ignorance. After catching his daughter and his far less malleable stepson in a torrid embrace Jackson is written off after which he promptly joins the military to work out his inner demons.

You know that I want you
And you know that I need you
I want it bad, your bad romance

Fast forward seven years and after a shoulder wound ends his sniper career Jackson is at a cross roads when conveniently he runs into his step sister. Before he knows it they are roommates and lovers, the only complication is Lily’s fiancé. Whoa, what? Yes you read that correctly but not to worry Lily is only considering marrying the chump to save lives. Well not exactly but close enough.

I want your love and
I want your revenge
I want your love
I don’t wanna be friends

Bad Romance was an entertaining if frustrating read, Lily’s doormat tendencies, of course couched in terms of nobility had me grinding my teeth on more than one occasion. However I have come to two conclusions first that Lady Gaga’s song however nice to listen to make no sense whatsoever and second that I am the problem and may be caught in a bad romance with angst. Despite the interesting plotline and solid writing I found myself wanting to sit the characters down and have a serious chat with them about their choices and the importance of communication in relationships. However, I have no doubt that there will be many who will enjoy Bad Romance with none of the confusion or annoyance that I found my enjoyment tempered with.
