Regan Flay has been talking about you.

Regan Flay is on the cusp of achieving her control-freak mother’s “plan” for high school success―cheerleading, student council, the Honor Society—until her life gets turned horribly, horribly upside down. Every bitchy text. Every bitchy email. Every lie, manipulation, and insult she’s ever said have been printed out and taped to all the lockers in school.

Now Regan has gone from popular princess to total pariah.

The only person who even speaks to her is her former best friend’s hot but socially miscreant brother, Nolan Letner. Nolan thinks he knows what Regan’s going through, but what nobody knows is that Regan isn’t really Little Miss Perfect. In fact, she’s barely holding it together under her mom’s pressure. But the consequences of Regan’s fall from grace are only just beginning. Once the chain reaction starts, no one will remain untouched…

THE ASCENDERS Takes You To the In-between Where Teens Who Died Young Go On the Epic Adventure of an After-Lifetime.

ASCENDERS (Ascenders 1) by CL Gaber

YA Paranormal Romance/Fantasy

SYNOPSIS

Walker Callaghan doesn’t know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago…and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.

Walker Callaghan, 16, is dead.

She doesn’t go to Heaven or Hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were that morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.

These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much. In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. “There are even cheerleaders in death,” Walker observes. It’s not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who “used to have this band.” The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie as the Joker.

Principal King explains the rules — there are none. Why? You can’t die twice.

There is no homework.

No tests.

No SATS.

You’re just there to learn because the human brain isn’t fully formed until you’re 24.

By the way, you can’t get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do …because no one knows how long you’ll stay in this realm or what’s next. Walker falls hard for tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He’s looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.

 Ascenders-3

REVIEW

Denial is more than a river in Egypt.”

Ascenders was surprisingly atmospheric and moody, from the eerily foreboding cover to the uniquely inventive plot. When I first read the description I expected something more along the lines of an updated Flatliners. A relatively unknown flick from the early 90’s staring Julia Roberts when she was just a dewy ingénue and probably eclipsed by the success of another movie released that year Pretty Woman. If not Flatliners then my expectations were more in line with an even more obscure movie from 1987 called Made in Heaven.

However I was completely mistaken Ascenders read more like a film noir initially, Walker awakens in a new house in completely unfamiliar circumstances. Her normally super organized but financially strapped mother is behaving strangely and their new home is opulent compared to their former standard of living. She is convinced that things are not as they should be and she is right. Rather than a sudden move inspired by a lottery win or some such it is clear to the reader if not Walker that she is no longer with the living.

While Walker is a fairly astute girl being a reporter and all I would think that a teacher in music appreciation by the name of Kurt and technology specialist who used to work for a company named after a fruit would be fairly definitive proof that something really strange is going on. When she does finally catch on that she is in fact dead the mysteries only grow, who or what is watching her? Why does the surly Daniel want to return to the living plane so badly?

I enjoyed Ascenders though at times the plotting may have felt inconsistent, I would definitely read more by this author in the future.

SWEET (Contours of the Heart #3) by Tammara Webber

NA Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

He’s the love of her life, but he doesn’t know it.

She’s his one moment of sacrifice in a lifetime of survival.

He was damaged and wild, but resilient.

She’s always been obedient. Now she’s restless.

Home for the summer between college and med school, Pearl Torres Frank knows two things: Boyce Wynn is the embodiment of everything she should run from, and everything she wants to run to. Rebellious and loud. Unconcerned with society’s opinion of him. Passionate. Strong. Dangerous.

And one more trait he hides from everyone but her:

Sweet.

EXCERPT –  Boyce watched me, a lit cigarette in one hand and a koozied beer in the other. We hadn’t spoken since that kiss, other than his usual juvenile quips during biology—the ones that drove Mel and Mr. Quinn insane and made Landon smirk and shake his head and had me biting the inside of my cheek to suppress my smile.

At first, I’d been confused, then disappointed, and then angry. I’d worked my way to acceptance, like when I’d known I was drowning and there was nothing I could do. He’d merely gone back to being Boyce Wynn, who did what he wanted and who he wanted. And I’d gone back to being Pearl Frank—star student, social royalty, good girl.

But I couldn’t forget that kiss. The fixed glint of his eyes

across the fire said that neither could he.

Excerpt

She knew she was being watched. She could feel the gaze homed in her, was aware of little shivers cascading along her skin. The fine hairs on the back of her neck had risen. But she gave no outward appearance that she was bothered by the scrutiny

while inside her heart pounded with the fierceness of a regimental drum beating out the call to battle.

She’d overheard someone talking about an inspector from Scotland Yard who was wandering about. But he was supposedly a guest and not searching for her. She hadn’t been in London long enough for alarm bells to be ringing, for anyone to suspect—

“Champagne?” a deep voice asked behind her.

She would dearly love some, but needed to remain sharp and focused. Spinning around to decline the footman’s offer, she came up short.

The man extending a flute toward her was most certainly not a servant. Nobility, entitlement, privilege screamed from every pore, every finely stitched seam, every thread of exquisite cloth that cloaked his magnificent frame. His dark eyes blatantly assessed her, and the hairs on her nape quivered once more. So it had been him watching her. He possessed an intensity that was slightly unsettling, made her fear that he could see straight through her.

But if he could, he would be calling for that inspector that was around here, not offering her champagne. His gaze wouldn’t roam over her as though he were taking measure of every curve, dip, and swell while imaging how each would fill his hands.

If she had to guess this man’s rank, she would put him as duke. He wore power and influence like a second skin. She could make do with a duke.

She gave him her most alluring, sensual smile. “I am quite parched, and so appreciate a man who can fulfill my desires. Thank you.”

Wrapping her fingers around the stem of the flute, she made sure that her gloved fingers touched his, lingered for a moment. His eyes widened slightly, and a corner of his luscious mouth curled up almost imperceptibly. Anyone else might not have even noticed, but she had trained herself to discern the smallest of details. People communicated far more truth with their bodies and facial expressions than they ever did with their words.

She tapped the edge of her glass to his. “To an interesting night.”

Peering over the rim of her flute as she slowly sipped, she watched him as he did the same, inspecting her. She’d never been so intrigued by a gentleman. Most fawned over her once they made their move and got her attention. This one was more cautious, more assessing. He would be a challenge, but if she was right about his position, she was more than willing to welcome it. She licked her lips, satisfaction coursing through her as his brown eyes darkened. He was not as skilled as she at appearing unaffected.

“Isn’t it rather scandalous for a gentleman to approach a woman he doesn’t know without someone at his side to make introductions?” she asked.

“I am nothing if I am not scandalous.”

“Should I be wary? Is my reputation at risk?”

“Depends on your reputation. Considering that you arrived without chaperone or escort, I assume your reputation is of little consequence to you.”

So he’d seen her arrive, had been observing her for a good long while. Nearly three quarters of an hour now. It was a good omen that she had managed to hold his interest for so long. “I’m a widow. I don’t require a chaperone.”

“My condolences on your loss, although it appears you’re out of mourning.”

She didn’t fail to notice the way his gaze dipped to the plumped up mounds of her bosom. They drew men much more than her face, which was lacking in beauty. But it served to her advantage as a dipping gaze seldom noticed the shrewdness in her eyes. “It’s been two years now. We were exploring the jungles in India when he was attacked by a tiger. Terribly gruesome.” She visibly shuddered, ensuring he was distracted by the quivering flesh of her breasts. Men were so easy to manipulate. She should be ashamed, but she had learned long ago that one shouldn’t be regretful about what one was forced to do in order to survive. “I don’t wish to dwell on it.”

She took another sip of the excellent champagne, allowing her hand to tremble slightly. “I fear I need a distraction. It has been lovely visiting with you, but I should like to tour the gentlemen’s salon. As I understand it, after tonight, ladies will no longer be welcomed within its walls. I want to see what we are being denied.”

“I’ll accompany you.”

“Surely you have a wife somewhere who would not appreciate your attentions to me.”

“No wife. No betrothed, no paramour. I’ve no interest in attachments of a permanent nature.”

“I can’t blame you there. Having had one, I now find myself feeling quite the same way.”

He offered his arm. “Then shall we?”

She placed her hand in the crook of his elbow and was greeted with firm muscle. A man who didn’t just lie about with no purpose. Her head barely reached his shoulder. He was a towering man, large and broad. But it was more than his physical traits that made him appear powerful. She suspected if his height did not extend past her knee, he would still dominate his surroundings. He seemed to dwarf everything around him. She didn’t know if she had ever met a man who commanded such supremacy.

“Well, Ms. Elliott, I believe I’m ready to sleep with you.”

My gaze searches the length of his body. Where his jeans once hugged his hips just right—and yes, I noticed—he now wears his green basketball shorts.

“Do you always travel prepared to spend the night out?”

“No . . .”

He rounds the bed slowly and sits on the side opposite me.

“I’m not that kind of guy. I’m more the superstitious type.”

My heart hammers at his nearness. He may be across the bed, but he’s here, in my room, asking nothing of me other than a bed to sleep in.

“Enlighten me,” I say.

“I wear the shorts, under my jeans, the night before a game,” he starts. “And if it’s an away game, the night before travel too.”

“Because winning has nothing to do with skill and strategy, only whether or not you’re wearing the shorts?”

He chucks a pillow at me. Then I reach over to my nightstand where the product of my kitchen visit lies, tossing it across the bed to him. He picks it up and eyes the package of frozen peas.

“For your knee,” I say, and there’s a small silence as he positions the bag over the visible swelling.

“Thank you.” He says nothing more to give away what we both know, that Jake’s cheap shot did more than draw blood. Adam absorbed the shock of the blow with his whole body.

I turn off my lamp and slide down until my head rests on my pillow. He slides down too, so he’s on his back, the bag of peas molded over his knee, his head turned to face me.

“You’re miles away,” I say. But that’s not true. He’s closer than I’ve let anyone get since sophomore year.

He reaches his arm across the space between us, his hand finding mine where it lies on my pillow. He doesn’t grab it but instead snakes his pinky around mine.

I stifle a sharp breath, shocked not so much at the gesture itself but at the jolt of the touch of his skin.

“I’m right here,” he says. “Just being a gentleman. Friends or not, I don’t have much control over what can happen…” His eyes dip to his shorts, and I giggle. “… if I get too close to a gorgeous girl in bed.”

Heat floods my neck, my cheeks, and I cross my fingers the room is dark enough that he doesn’t notice. The thought of Adam’s body pressed against mine—of him being aroused by me—threatens my last shred of resolve. Because I want him in so many ways, this gentleman who keeps his distance. But I want even more not to lose him as my friend.

“You need to stop saying stuff like that.”

“Like what?”

I chuck the pillow back at him.

“I’m just asking for some clarification,” he says. “I mean, I say a lot of things.”

I purse my lips and glare.

“Fine. Okay. I won’t call you gorgeous anymore. I don’t need to. You already know I think it.”

How does he do that? Unabashedly say things threatening to unravel me. With the few others who have shared this bed with me, all I ever wanted was to get to the sleeping part so I could close my eyes and forget, fool myself into a night free from dreams pretending the arms around me belonged to Bryan. When the dreams stayed hidden, sleep was the one thing that could transport me back to where I used to be.

But tonight I fight the fatigue. I don’t want the evening to end, don’t want to pretend I’m with anyone else. Still, my eyes grow heavy, blink, blink, blinking me off to sleep. With each flutter of my lids, I watch my pinky, still laced with his. Our hands are the last thing I see before I lose the battle and sleep takes me.

In the early morning, I don’t have to search for a warm body that finds more comfort in the art of spooning a pillow. Because Adam is still here, his finger still tangled with mine. But we failed at maintaining the bed-border relationship.

His arm no longer has to reach to find me. It’s bent at the elbow, pulled tight to his chest and along with it, my hand. And his head, tilted slightly in my direction, rests dreamily on my pillow. I watch him, this beautiful boy with an equally beautiful, forgiving, nonjudgmental heart. And for a minute, I imagine giving my heart to him and his accepting it without question. I imagine a future with him in it, but only for a moment, before I let his soft exhales lull me back to sleep. Reality can wait a few more hours.

#Droughtlander is Over…Finally! GUEST POST

GUEST POST – teachergirl73

outlander-episode-9

I think that for all of us who are fans of Outlander, the television series, we can all agree that the return of Outlander couldn’t have come soon enough. The second half of the series kicked off with a bang as we were brought right back to where we left off, at the garrison of Fort William where Claire was being held captive by Captain “Black Jack” Randall. This episode, named “The Reckoning”, was different from the first half of the season because there is a change in narration. The episode is told exclusively from Jamie’s point of view. It was a real treat to hear Jamie’s voice as the central focus since the novels are primarily written from Claire’s perspective. All along I’ve really enjoyed the changes that the show’s writers have made because I strongly feel like they have only served to enhance and improve on the storytelling. These changes have given a voice to the thoughts and actions of the other characters in the story. Whether it’s additional scenes, dialogue or even just a lingering focus on a character’s facial expression, the creativity of the show’s writers has filled out the story in new and wonderfully, unexpected ways.

outlander

If you have read the book, then you are well aware that there are some traumatic events to come, and I know that I am eagerly waiting in anticipation to see how the show will deal with the developments between Claire, Jamie and of course, Captain Randall.  One sensitive issue was the spanking scene, which caused much speculation between die-hard fans.  In the book, Jamie had to deliver corporal punishment to his wife for putting all of the Mackenzie men at risk by disobeying his instructions to stay put when he left to confront a deserter from British army who might be able to help clear his name. When the Mackenzie men mounted the attack to rescue Claire from the clutches of Randall, she put everyone’s lives at risk. The show kept very close to the original plot line and I thought that both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe did a fantastic job pulling off what must have been a difficult scene to navigate.

In Episode 10, “By The Pricking of My Thumbs”, we begin the lead up to a significant twist in the plot that changes the course for Jamie and Claire. There were some excellent scenes and dialogue added that were the perfect complement to the story, such as Dougal’s drunken meltdown upon hearing of his wife’s passing or Laoghaire’s stubborn refusal to accept Jamie’s marriage when Claire confronted her about the ill-wish. There’s also a scene where Claire stumbled upon Geilles conducting a very similar pagan ritual dance that she witnessed at Craigh na Dun the night before she disappeared from Inverness in 1945. We also finally understand how Jamie became involved in a duel, an event that does not occur in Outlander (but does happen later on in in the series). This scene had been in the previews for the second half of the season and it left me wondering how the duel actually came to be.

The episode wraps up with Claire being swept up in the drama surrounding Geilles Duncan, and so once again, Claire’s life is in peril because she didn’t listen to her husband’s advice to stay away from Geilles. Oh the would-have, should-have, could-haves that plague Claire! Even though, I’m well familiar with what is to come, I find myself waiting with great anticipation for the last half of the season to unfold.

Excerpt:

He just looked at me and nodded. It was a deal. Officially.

He sealed it the way we did at the quarry. He stuck out his pinky finger. We swore on it like little kids.
“When this delicious dinner is done and the kids are asleep,” I began, “I need you to tell me everything you know about going back.”

Another nod.

Then he grabbed me by the hips until I was face to chest, so I was forced to look up into his gray eyes. When he lifted me off the ground, I gasped. “You’re really going to do this?” Daniel asked, looking at me hard. “What if I don’t want you to do it? What if I forbid you? The last thing I need right now is to worry about you once I get there.”

“First of all, you can’t forbid me to do anything. And you won’t have to worry,” I insisted, secretly pleased that he cared that much. My surprised body pressed into his furious one.

“You and I are going to spend the next few weeks going over everything you’ve learned. We’re going to leave nothing to chance. We’re going to become scholars of time travel, but my way. We become experts by trying to answer every question,” I said, my feet still off the ground.

“We’re taking a really desperate, not to mention audacious, chance; but then everything in life and death is a desperate and audacious chance,” he said, softening his grip, lowering my feet to the ground, and holding me close.

“Then let’s be audacious together,” I said, glancing out the window where the kids and the dog were falling onto fresh snow mounds on the front lawn, thanks to an afternoon storm that seemed to represent the blank slate we needed to start anew.

Perhaps my period of desperate mourning was over, although the pain was still there and the wound was fresh. Daniel seemed to know it was also time to move on and he made that clear when he put his fingers under my chin, tilted my head up, and pressed his lips to mine in a hard kiss.

“Callaghan, chances are we’ll never make it back here,” he said into my ear as he held me. The beating of his heart told me a different story.

“I don’t like those chances, so let’s kick them in the ass,” I said.
