Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

The Spanish flu infected 500 million people across the world between 1918 and 1920, killing approximately 3 to 5% of the world’s population. Typically an influenza epidemic poses greater risk to the very young, old and weakened members of society, whereas the Spanish flu was predominantly fatal amongst the younger healthy population. This is thought to be because those in good health had strong immune systems, which attacked the body while trying to combat the infection resulting in a greater number of deaths than in the weakened population whose immune systems would not have reacted as strongly and therefore would have done less damage. It’s easy to discount this as having taken place almost one hundred years ago until one realizes that the Spanish flu was an variant of H1N1. Sound familiar?

STARTERS-ENDERS-PRICE

A shortage of vaccine caused author Lissa Price to ponder what would happen “IF” a pandemic struck leaving behind only the very young and the aged. I had the great opportunity to meet Ms. Price and learn a bit more about her phenomenally popular books Starters and Enders. What would happen to society if a pandemic struck leaving only the very young and the elderly, those given priority when offering immunizations. I, for one am looking forward to reading this disturbingly plausible series.

Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie’s only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.

He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie’s head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator’s grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations’ plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . .

Take the opportunity to meet Lissa and find out more about this exciting series Saturday, May 3rd at Chapters in Barrie, Ontario @ 1p.m.
