Realm Walker (Realm Walker #1) – Kathleen Collins

Struck immediately by Realm Walker’s gorgeous cover, I mean was there anyone who didn’t love Trinity’s skintight leather catsuit in The Matrix, I knew that I had to read this book. From its kick-ass heroine of mysterious origins to her delicious vampire lover Realm Walker is no holds barred supernatural adventure from beginning to end, while seamlessly incorporating a teeth gritting-ly frustrating romance. Realm Walker is a chimera of all the best aspects of the paranormal genre. Kathleen Collins’ has skillfully reinvented the classic paranormal paradigm with the mysterious hard boiled investigator type with just enough femininity as to be a convincing romantic heroine and the autocratic yet emotionally vulnerable vampire who loves her in a dark world full of monsters and the result is a fresh and entertaining read.

As a Realm Walker for the Agency, Juliana Norris tracks deadly paranormal quarry using her unique ability to see magical signatures. She excels at her job, but her friends worry about her mysterious habit of dying in the line of duty without staying dead. That’s only the first of her secrets.

Most people don’t know Juliana became the mate of master vampire Thomas Kendrick before he abandoned her seven years ago. Most people don’t know the horrors she endured at the hands of the vampire he left in command. Most people don’t know her true parentage, or why a demon on a world-threatening rampage has taken a personal interest in her…

Oh Kathleen Collins, where have you been all my life?

As I read this supernatural based work that was part police procedural, part love story I was reminded of a certain series that featured a necromancer affectionately known as the Executioner. While I won’t make any further comparisons as that series broke my heart with the dark, dark places it went but Realm Walker made me dare to hope that the void it left could someday be filled. There were just enough similarities to other paranormal favorites of mine that I was immediately at ease in the world that this author has created yet Realm Walker definitely had its own unique identity. Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting the follow-up scheduled for March, Death’s Daughter…isn’t that just the best title?
